Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow in 1866 and generally credited as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art. In 1911 he co-founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) in Munich with Franz Marc, August Macke and Gabriele Munter, a loose group whose almanac and exhibitions helped define German Expressionism before the First World War broke it apart. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, in 1944, five years after taking French citizenship.
