Russian and Soviet Composers

Composers of Russia and the Soviet Union, from the nationalist circle known as The Five and its pupils to the twentieth century symphonists, whose operas, ballets and orchestral works drew on Russian folk song and fairy tale and on the pressures of Soviet life. The group includes the composer of Scheherazade, the composer of Peter and the Wolf and Romeo and Juliet, and the composer of the Leningrad Symphony and the Fifth, whose music was shaped by the state, the war and the Russian past.
