Adoration of the Magi (Gentile da Fabriano)

The Adoration of the Magi is a tempera on panel altarpiece painted by Gentile da Fabriano in 1423, held today in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It shows the three Magi paying homage to the newborn Jesus in the presence of Mary and Joseph, with the Magi journey told across three linked scenes set within the work arched frame. Commissioned in 1420 by the wealthy Florentine banker Palla Strozzi, the altarpiece is generally regarded as the culminating masterpiece of the International Gothic style and the finest work Gentile produced, notable for its innovative handling of light, depth and three dimensional space alongside lavish gold leaf and gemstone ornament that advertised the patron wealth and piety.
