Liberation of Saint Peter (Raphael)

Liberation of Saint Peter is a fresco completed in 1514 by the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael in the Stanza di Eliodoro of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. It illustrates the Acts of the Apostles account of Saint Peter's rescue from Herod's prison by an angel, arranging the story in three simultaneous scenes in symmetrical balance: the angel waking Peter at center, the angel guiding him past sleeping guards on the right, and a guard on the left noticing the miraculous light and rousing a companion.
