Madonna of Chancellor Rolin

Madonna of Chancellor Rolin is an oil on panel painting from around 1435 by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck, now in the Musee du Louvre in Paris. It depicts the Virgin Mary presenting the infant Jesus to Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Duchy of Burgundy, who kneels opposite her in a votive portrait arrangement within an ornate loggia. Rolin, shown as an aged man of about sixty, commissioned the work for his parish church in Autun, where it remained until the church burned down in 1793, later passing through Autun Cathedral before reaching the Louvre in 1805. Behind the two figures a detailed landscape of Autun stretches into the distance, rendered under the same unified light as the foreground.
