Madonna with the Blue Diadem

An oil-on-wood painting attributed to Raphael and his pupil Gianfrancesco Penni, probably painted in Rome in the 1510s and now in the Louvre; it is also known under several alternative titles, including Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John. The composition shows the Virgin lifting a veil over the sleeping Christ Child while cradling the infant John the Baptist, set against ruins near St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The overall design is credited to Raphael, but the bright coloring and porcelain-like finish are usually attributed to finishing work by his assistant Penni.
