The Fire in the Borgo

The Fire in the Borgo is a fresco created by the workshop of the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael between 1514 and 1517, part of his commission to decorate the rooms in the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican now known as the Stanze di Raffaello. It depicts Pope Leo IV halting a fire in the year 847 with a benediction given from a balcony in front of the Old St. Peter's Basilica, and the fresco lends its own name to the room in which it hangs, the Stanza dell'incendio del Borgo. While it is assumed Raphael designed the complex composition, some critics believe the fresco itself was most likely painted by his assistant, Giulio Romano.
