Theotokos of Tikhvin

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

The Theotokos of Tikhvin is a revered Russian Orthodox icon of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, painted in the Hodegetria-Eleusa style and traditionally dated by art historians to around 1300. According to local tradition it appeared miraculously over a lake near Tikhvin, Russia, in 1383, and it is kept today at the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery. German forces removed the icon from the Tikhvin Museum during the Second World War in 1941, after which it traveled through Pskov and Riga to the United States, where it remained at Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago from 1949 until it was returned to Tikhvin in 2004. It is venerated as a protector of the city of Tikhvin and of northwestern Russia.
