Visitation (Ghirlandaio)

A tempera-on-panel painting by the Italian Renaissance painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, dated 1491 and commissioned by Lorenzo Tornabuoni for the church that became Santa Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi in Florence; it now hangs in the Louvre. The painting depicts the Visitation, the Gospel of Luke's account of the meeting between the Virgin Mary and her cousin Elizabeth (Luke 1:39 to 56), showing Elizabeth kneeling before Mary while two other women, identified as Mary the mother of James and Mary Salome, stand at the sides.
