Apse of Sant Climent, Taüll

The Apse of Sant Climent, Taüll is a Romanesque fresco from about 1123, originally painted on the apse wall of the church of Sant Climent de Taüll in the Catalan Pyrenees and preserved today on canvas at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. It shows Christ in Majesty enthroned in a mandorla and holding an open book inscribed EGO SUM LUX MUNDI, I am the light of the world, surrounded by symbols of the four evangelists, with the Virgin Mary and other figures in the register below. Painted by an anonymous artist known only as the Master of Taüll, who takes his name from this work, it is regarded as one of the masterpieces of European Romanesque painting for its geometric composition, sophisticated color and imported pigments, and it drew the attention of later artists including Picasso. The fresco was removed from the church and transferred to canvas between 1919 and 1923 for preservation.
