Lamentation over the Dead Christ (Botticelli, Milan)

Lamentation over the Dead Christ with Saints is a painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli, made between about 1490 and 1495, showing the Virgin Mary holding the dead Christ across her lap in a Pieta arrangement flanked by saints. Botticelli rendered the mourning figures in contorted, distorted poses rather than naturalistic ones, a departure that influenced later Renaissance painters. Originally in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Florence, the painting is now in the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan; Botticelli painted a second version of the same subject, from around 1492, now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
