Mérode Altarpiece

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

The Mérode Altarpiece is an oil on oak panel triptych attributed to the Early Netherlandish painter Robert Campin and an assistant, unsigned and undated, now held at The Cloisters in New York. Its three panels show the donors kneeling in prayer in a garden, the Annunciation to Mary set in a contemporary domestic room, and Saint Joseph at work as a carpenter with the tools of his trade. The painting carries rich religious symbolism, including a lily and a fountain, and the Holy Spirit represented by rays of light entering through the central panel window.
