Theotokos of Pochayiv

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

An icon of the Virgin Mary painted in a late Byzantine style, of the Eleusa iconographic type, venerated by both Eastern Orthodox and Catholic communities. Its exact origin is uncertain; scholars have proposed either Byzantium or Bulgaria based on its style. The icon has been kept at the Assumption Cathedral of the Pochaiv Lavra in Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine since it was donated by Anna Hoyska in 1597, and was formally crowned on September 8, 1773. As with many venerated Orthodox icons, it is displayed beneath an elaborate metal riza covering most of the surface except the faces; a nearby rock bearing what is venerated as an imprint of the Virgin Mary's footprint is associated with the icon.
