Virgin and Child with Saint Anne (Masaccio)

A tempera-on-panel painting, also known as Sant'Anna Metterza, made around 1424 to 1425 by the Italian Renaissance painter Masaccio, likely working alongside Masolino da Panicale, for the Church of Sant'Ambrogio in Florence; it now hangs in the Uffizi Gallery. It is among Masaccio's earliest known paintings and is notable for its confident perspectival structure, its unusually naturalistic depiction of the Christ child rather than a stylized Gothic cherub, and an early use of a single consistent light source that would shape later Renaissance painting; the figures' soft, rounded modeling reflects the influence of the sculptor Donatello.
