The painting depicts the Visitation, the Gospel of Luke's account of the meeting between the Virgin Mary and her cousin Elizabeth (Luke 1:39 to 56), showing Elizabeth kneeling before Mary while two other women, identified as Mary the mother of James and Mary Salome, stand at the sides.
