Impression, Sunrise

Landscapes and Still Lifes

Impression, Sunrise is a small 1872 harbor view Claude Monet painted at Le Havre, showing a hazy orange sun over water rendered in loose, visible brushstrokes. Exhibited at the first independent group show the Impressionists organized in 1874, it prompted the critic Louis Leroy to write a mocking review titled Exhibition of the Impressionists that took the painting's title as proof the whole group offered mere impressions rather than finished pictures, a jab the painters then adopted as their own movement's name.
