Domenichino

Domenichino (1581-1641) was an Italian Baroque painter of the Bolognese School, active chiefly in Rome and Naples. His masterpiece, The Last Communion of St. Jerome of 1614, was judged by contemporaries as comparable to Raphael's Transfiguration, and his work built on the example of Raphael and the Carracci family, emphasizing classical idealism and expressive gesture. Though he was overshadowed during his lifetime by rivals such as Guido Reni, modern scholarship has restored his standing as one of the most important Italian painters of the seventeenth century.
