Francisco Rizi

Francisco Rizi, also recorded as Francisco Ricci de Guevara, was a Spanish painter of Italian ancestry born in Madrid on 9 April 1614 and died on 2 August 1685. His father Antonio Ricci was an Italian painter who had settled in Spain in 1583, and his brother Juan also became a painter. Rizi trained under Vicente Carducho and became one of the earliest Spanish painters to adopt the Baroque style during the 1640s, serving as painter of Toledo Cathedral from 1653 and being named Painter to the King in 1656. He also directed stage decoration at the Buen Retiro Palace theatre and ran a workshop that trained the painter Claudio Coello. He died suddenly in 1685 while at work on a commission at El Escorial, which Coello completed after him.
