Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647) was an Italian Baroque painter of the Bolognese school, deeply influenced by the classicism of Annibale Carracci. He became especially celebrated for his dramatic fresco work, above all the Assumption of the Virgin painted on the dome of Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome, completed in 1627 and considered one of the major church fresco decorations of the late 1620s for its innovative use of perspective and theatrical energy.
