Martino Altomonte

Martino Altomonte, born Johann Martin Hohenberg in Naples in 1657, was a Baroque painter who trained under Giovanni Battista Gaulli and Carlo Maratti in Rome before becoming court painter to King John III Sobieski of Poland in 1684, at which point he adopted the name Altomonte. After settling in Vienna around 1699 to 1702, he remained there for the rest of his career, producing frescoes and altarpieces that combined Neapolitan chiaroscuro with Venetian color and helped establish the Vienna Baroque style. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and continued to receive major religious and architectural commissions across Austria until his death in 1745.
