Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) was an American painter, muralist and printmaker who led the Regionalist movement of the 1930s, depicting the everyday life of the American Midwest through fluid, sculptural figures. His mural cycles, including America Today and A Social History of Missouri, established him as one of the most prominent American artists of his generation. He also taught at the Art Students League of New York, where his students included a young Jackson Pollock.
