Kim Whanki (1913-1974) was a South Korean painter and one of the first generation of Korean abstract artists, later a founding figure of the Dansaekhwa monochrome movement. Trained in Japan and active in Paris before settling in New York from 1963 until his death, he blended Korean aesthetic traditions and East Asian philosophy with Western abstraction. His late New York canvases, built from repeated dots and lines across the whole surface, are considered his most significant achievement.
