Mai Thứ

Mai Thứ, born Mai Trung Thứ in An Duong district near Haiphong, Vietnam, in 1906, and died in Hai Phong on 10 October 1980, was a Vietnamese painter who graduated in the first class, 1925 to 1930, of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi. He lived and worked mostly in France, painting chiefly in silk with gouache rather than oil, and became known for depicting women, children and scenes of daily life in a wistful, lyrical style. He held three major solo exhibitions in Paris, Children of Mai Thu in 1964, Women in Mai Thu's Eyes in 1967, and Mai Thu's Poetic World in 1980, and beyond painting he worked as a musician and filmmaker, notably filming Ho Chi Minh's visit to Paris in 1946.
