Pilipili Mulongoy

Pilipili Mulongoy, born Mulongoyi Nkulu Mitenga Philippe on 12 February 1914 and died on 10 March 2007, was a painter from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who began his working life as a plumber and building painter. After passing a drawing test in Elisabethville, now Lubumbashi, in 1947, he was recruited by the French painter Pierre Romain-Desfosses to develop his art and went on to specialise in paintings of nature, animals and plants, later teaching at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Elisabethville. His work became especially popular in Europe and was collected by members of the Belgian royal family, including King Albert II, King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola, and has since been exhibited across Africa, Europe and North America.
