Baldassare Croce

Baldassare Croce (1558-1628) was an Italian painter of the late Mannerist period, born in Bologna and trained there under Cesare Nebbia and Giovanni Guerra before settling in Rome by 1581. He became a prolific decorator of Roman churches, contributing frescoes to the Vatican Sala Clementina and to the Gesù, San Giovanni in Laterano, San Giacomo degli Spagnoli and Santa Susanna, as well as collaborative work on the Scala Santa. He led the Accademia di San Luca and was named its Principe in January 1628, shortly before his death that November.
