Fra Bartolomeo (1472-1517) was an Italian Renaissance painter who specialized in religious subjects, working in an idealized High Renaissance style. He is remembered for his portrait of the reformer Girolamo Savonarola, which remains the best known image of him. In 1500 he became a Dominican friar and briefly gave up painting, resuming in 1504 on the orders of his monastery, and he remained friends with Raphael, each influencing the other's work.
