Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) was an Italian Renaissance painter, architect, art historian and biographer active in Florence. He designed notable Florentine buildings including the Uffizi and the Vasari Corridor, and moved in the circle of the Medici court. He is best remembered for his book Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, a collection of artist biographies considered a founding work of Western art-historical writing and still cited in modern studies of Renaissance artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, though modern scholars have identified factual errors in its coverage of artists who lived before Vasari himself.
