Matteo Pérez

Matteo Pérez, also known as Matteo Pérez de Alesio or Matteo da Lecce after his birthplace of Lecce in Apulia, was an Italian Mannerist painter born in 1547 and traditionally said to have died around 1616, though archival evidence suggests he may have lived until 1628. He worked in Rome, where he trained partly under Michelangelo and painted the fresco The Dispute over the Body of Moses in the Sistine Chapel, and in Malta, where he produced thirteen frescoes depicting the great siege of Malta in the Grandmaster's Palace in Valletta. From 1588 he spent more than forty years in Peru, chiefly in Lima, where he founded an early art academy and also engaged in mining ventures alongside his painting career.
