Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, commonly known as il Morazzone, was an Italian painter and draughtsman active in Milan from 1573 to 1626. Known mainly for his altarpieces, he produced large decorative frescoes for the Sacro Monte di Varese and the Sacro Monte di Varallo and was, alongside Giovanni Battista Crespi, Giulio Cesare Procaccini and Tanzio da Varallo, one of the principal Lombard painters of the early seventeenth century. His work shows a greater classicism than his contemporaries, reflecting the influence of the piety and mysticism taught by Charles Borromeo, combined with training he received in Rome.
