Pedro Berruguete was a Spanish painter who lived from about 1450 to 1504 and adopted Flemish techniques and conventions, so that he belongs to the Hispano-Flemish style. He is best known for paintings of the first years of the Inquisition and for religious imagery for Castilian retablos. Some scholars consider him the first Renaissance painter in Spain. He was the father of Alonso Berruguete, regarded as the most important sculptor of the Spanish Renaissance, and the fame of his son has often led to confusion between the two men in attributions.
