Stanisław Samostrzelnik

Stanisław Samostrzelnik was a Polish Renaissance painter and Cistercian monk from Kraków, born around 1490 and died in 1541 at the monastery of Mogiła near the city. He is regarded as the first Polish painter known by name to work in the Renaissance style, and his surviving work includes frescoes in churches across southern Poland, most notably at the Cistercian monastery in Mogiła, as well as manuscript illumination and a portrait of Bishop Piotr Tomicki kept in the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Kraków. His patrons included Tomicki and Krzysztof Szydłowiecki, and his earliest documented work dates from 1506.
