Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died in 1987. An American painter, printmaker and filmmaker, he became the most prominent figure of American Pop Art in the early 1960s, using the commercial silkscreen printing process to mass produce paintings of consumer packaging and celebrity images, treating repetition and mechanical reproduction as subject matter in themselves. He gained wide recognition in 1962 with his paintings of Campbell's Soup Cans, thirty two canvases depicting each variety of the product with the detached, deadpan precision of an advertisement, alongside related works based on Coca Cola bottles and Brillo boxes. Warhol went on to found The Factory, his New York studio, and to work extensively in film and celebrity portraiture.
