A Lady and Gentleman in Black is an oil on canvas portrait painted by Rembrandt in 1633, showing a well-dressed husband and wife in formal black attire typical of Dutch portraiture of the period. The canvas measures about 131.6 by 109 centimeters. The Rembrandt Research Project initially disattributed the painting in 1987, judging it a product of Rembrandt's workshop, before reattributing it to Rembrandt himself in its 2015 corpus. X-ray examination has revealed that Rembrandt originally painted a child leaning against the seated woman's leg, a figure later painted over, possibly at the couple's own request following the child's death. The painting was stolen on March 18, 1990, from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and has not resurfaced since.
