Adoration of the Name of God is a large ceiling fresco, measuring 700 by 1,500 centimeters, painted by the young Francisco Goya in 1772 for the cupola over the Coreto, or Small Choir, of the Basilica del Pilar in Zaragoza, Spain, shortly after Goya's return from studying fresco technique in Italy. The composition shows groups of angels adoring the Tetragrammaton, the Hebrew letters for the name of God, inscribed within a glowing triangle at the center of an X-shaped arrangement of figures at varying heights, a Late Baroque treatment of a Catholic devotional theme tied to the basilica's own Marian dedication. Goya was paid 15,000 reales for the commission, less than other painters working on the same building's decoration at the time, and his surviving preparatory sketches show he originally envisioned a more dynamic composition than the finished fresco displays. The fresco has since been restored four times, in 1887, 1947, 1967 and 1991.
