At the Moulin Rouge is an oil-on-canvas painting by the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, painted between 1892 and 1895 and depicting patrons and performers of the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris, which had opened in 1889. Near the center of the composition a group of figures, including the writer Edouard Dujardin, the dancer La Macarona and the photographers Paul Sescau and Maurice Guibert, sit around a table with the dancer Jane Avril, recognizable by her red-orange hair, while Toulouse-Lautrec painted a self-portrait of himself standing in the background beside Dr. Gabriel Tapie de Celeyran; in the right foreground the English dancer May Milton's face is lit in a distinctive greenish glow. Toulouse-Lautrec was closely connected to Parisian nightlife and friendly with many Moulin Rouge performers, and the painting reflects that world and the atmosphere of Belle Epoque Paris. It has been part of the Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago since it was first displayed there in 1930.
