Bull-Leaping Fresco

Genre Scenes

The Bull-Leaping Fresco is the most completely restored of several stucco relief panels that once decorated the upper story of the east wing of the Minoan palace at Knossos on Crete, dated to around 1450 BC. It shows the bull-leaping activity that recurs often in Minoan art, in which figures vault over or beside a charging bull, though the exact technique and purpose of the practice are still not well understood more than a century after the frescoes were uncovered. The palace's frescoes are thought to have been destroyed in a collapse late in the Minoan period, possibly caused by an earthquake, and the restored panel is now held at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum in Crete.
