Rembrandt

Also Known As Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn
Painters

Rembrandt van Rijn was a Dutch painter and printmaker of the seventeenth century, celebrated for his psychologically penetrating portraits, his mastery of light and shadow, and an unflinching series of self-portraits painted across his entire working life. Trained in Leiden and active for most of his career in Amsterdam, he worked at the height of the Dutch Golden Age, producing altarpieces, biblical and mythological scenes, and portraits of the Amsterdam merchant class alongside etchings that remain foundational to the print medium.

FAQs

Why did Rembrandt paint so many self-portraits?

About 80 of his self-portraits survive from a 40-year career.

About 80 of Rembrandt's self-portraits survive from his 40-year career, far more than any other artist of his time. The National Gallery in London says he painted them for different reasons: to practise different expressions, to experiment with lighting effects, and also to sell. He had always used himself as a model, and in the last twenty years of his life he painted self-portraits with increasing frequency.

Did Rembrandt go bankrupt?

He applied for cessio bonorum in July 1656 and his goods were sold.

Yes, in a form the period considered respectable. In July 1656 Rembrandt successfully applied for cessio bonorum, a form of bankruptcy that avoided imprisonment, and his goods, including an impressive collection of paintings, were sold off. The National Gallery notes that Amsterdam was hit by a massive economic depression in the 1650s and that he had not even completed half the payments on his house when his creditors began to chase him for money.

Why this is disputed. Rembrandt is widely grouped with Baroque painting for his dramatic use of light and shadow, though some historians treat Dutch Golden Age painting as its own current, distinct from the Catholic Counter-Reformation context most closely associated with the term Baroque.
