The Jewish Bride

Portraits

The Jewish Bride is an oil on canvas painting by Rembrandt van Rijn, made around 1665 to 1669 and held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It shows a man and a woman in an intimate embrace, painted with rich, heavily worked color. The picture familiar title comes from a nineteenth century Amsterdam collector who read the scene as a Jewish father giving his daughter a necklace on her wedding day, an interpretation no longer accepted; the couple true identity is unresolved, with proposals ranging from Rembrandt son Titus and his bride to Old Testament figures such as Isaac and Rebekah. The Rembrandt biographer Christopher White called it one of the greatest expressions of tender, fused spiritual and physical love in the history of painting.
