The Triumph of Galatea, commonly known simply as Galatea, is a fresco completed around 1512 by the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael for the Villa Farnesina in Rome, the residence of the wealthy banker Agostino Chigi. It depicts the sea nymph Galatea from classical mythology riding a shell-shaped chariot drawn by dolphins across the waves, surrounded by tritons and cupids, a subject drawn from ancient poetry celebrating idealized female beauty. The fresco is considered one of the finest expressions of High Renaissance classicism and of Raphael own study of ancient sculpture and poetry.
