Girl with a Pierced Eardrum

Girl with a Pierced Eardrum is a stencil mural made by the street artist Banksy in October 2014 on a wall at Hanover Place on Spike Island in Bristol, England. It reworks the 1665 painting Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, replacing the pearl earring of the sitter with an existing yellow security alarm box already fixed to the wall in that position, turning a piece of street furniture into part of the image. The mural appeared overnight with no advance notice and was vandalised with black paint within two days of its unveiling; in April 2020 an unknown hand added a fabric face mask to the face of the girl, read at the time as a reference to healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic.
