Hedda Gabler is a play by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, whose world premiere was staged on January 31, 1891 at the Residenztheater in Munich, with Ibsen himself in attendance though remaining backstage. Though initial reviews were negative, it has since been recognized as a masterpiece of literary realism, nineteenth century theatre and world drama generally.
