Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright who lived from 1828 to 1906, widely regarded as one of the founders of modern realistic drama. He is known for plays including A Doll's House in 1879, Ghosts in 1881 and Hedda Gabler in 1890, which examined social convention, marriage and the position of women with a frankness that provoked controversy in his own time. His work moved theatre decisively away from the melodrama and poetic verse drama that had dominated the European stage before him.
