House of Loreius Tiburtinus

Ancient and Classical Monuments

The House of Loreius Tiburtinus, also known more accurately as the House of Octavius Quartio, is an ancient Roman house in Pompeii, Italy, first built during the Samnite period around the third century BC and substantially remodeled after the earthquake of 62 AD. It is especially known for its well-preserved Fourth Style wall paintings, which depict mythological scenes including episodes from the Iliad and the stories of Narcissus and of Pyramus and Thisbe, and for its extensive garden, laid out around two perpendicular water channels, or euripi, that once fed numerous fountains, sculptures and plantings across roughly 1,800 square meters. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD buried the house and preserved its decoration, which archaeologists led by Vittorio Spinazzola uncovered between 1916 and 1921, with further excavation campaigns in 1933, 1935 and 1971. The house's roughly eighteen ground-floor rooms are considered a representative example of a well-to-do Pompeian residence of its period.
