Judith Slaying Holofernes

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Judith Slaying Holofernes is a painting by the Italian early Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi, completed in 1612 to 1613 and held at the Museo Capodimonte in Naples, Italy. The canvas depicts an episode from the deuterocanonical Book of Judith in which Judith, aided by her maidservant Abra, beheads the sleeping Assyrian general Holofernes, rendered with the strong chiaroscuro and tightly framed physical immediacy that mark it as one of Gentileschi's iconic works; she painted a second version, now in the Uffizi, between 1613 and 1621.
