Rejected by the 1863 Salon jury, Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass) was shown instead at the Emperor-sanctioned Salon des Refuses under the title Le Bain, where its nude woman picnicking among two clothed men became the exhibition's principal attraction and source of scandal.
