Olympia is an 1863 oil painting by the French artist Edouard Manet, depicting a nude white woman lying on a bed and attended by a black maid, with the model for Olympia identified as Victorine Meurent. First shown at the 1865 Paris Salon, its confrontational gaze and visual details identifying the reclining woman as a prostitute caused public shock and controversy. The French government purchased the painting in 1890 after a subscription organized by Claude Monet, and it now hangs in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.
