Portrait of Henry VIII refers to the image of the English king painted around 1536 to 1537 as part of a larger wall mural by Hans Holbein the Younger and his workshop for the Palace of Whitehall, showing Henry alongside his father and two of his wives to celebrate the Tudor dynasty. The mural itself was destroyed when Whitehall Palace burned down in 1698, but numerous painted copies of the Henry section survive, including one at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool regarded as the finest, and a copy of the whole mural made in 1667 by Remigius van Leemput at Hampton Court Palace. A half-length preparatory portrait of Henry by Holbein's own hand survives at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, the only surviving painting of the king made directly by the artist.
