Portrait of Isabella of Portugal (van Eyck)

Portrait of Isabella of Portugal is a betrothal portrait painted by the early Netherlandish painter Jan van Eyck in 1428 to 1429 during a diplomatic visit to Portugal, depicting the thirty-year-old Portuguese princess Isabella of Portugal, who was being evaluated as a potential bride for Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Van Eyck had been commissioned by Philip to record Isabella's true appearance so the duke could judge her suitability as a wife, and the finished likeness was meant to serve as a kind of eyewitness testimony of the princess to accompany the marriage negotiations; the couple married on Christmas Day 1429. The original panel is lost and is known today only through later copies, including versions attributed to the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden and to an unidentified mid-fifteenth-century northern painter.
