Portrait of Philip the Good (van der Weyden)

This portrait of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy from 1419 to 1467, was painted in oil on wood panel by the Early Netherlandish master Rogier van der Weyden, who served as Philip's official court painter, and is usually dated to somewhere between the mid-1440s and the years after 1450. The original panel is lost, but the version considered closest to it, measuring 31 by 23 centimeters, survives in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, and further copies attributed mostly to van der Weyden's workshop are held in Lille, Antwerp, London and Paris. The duke is shown in three-quarter profile at around age fifty, dressed in black with a jeweled collar of firesteels forming the letter B for Burgundy and ending in the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece, holding a folded paper in carefully rendered hands; van der Weyden's characteristic elongation of the face softens the sitter's features while still allowing his pronounced double chin to show through. Some scholars believe the original portrait was made as one half of a marriage diptych paired with a lost portrait of Philip's third wife, Isabella of Portugal.
