Portrait of Wally

Portrait of Wally is a 1912 oil on panel painting by the Austrian artist Egon Schiele, showing his lover and model Walburga Wally Neuzil, whom he had met the previous year. It is held today at the Leopold Museum in Vienna. The painting was owned by the Jewish art dealer Lea Bondi Jaray until she was forced to give it up to Friedrich Welz in 1939 under Nazi persecution; the collector Rudolf Leopold acquired it in 1954, and it passed into the Leopold Museum collection when the museum was founded in 1994. When the painting was shown at New York Museum of Modern Art in 1997 and 1998, Bondi heirs recognized it and began legal proceedings claiming it as Nazi looted art, a case that ended in July 2010 with a nineteen million dollar settlement between the Leopold Museum and the Bondi estate that allowed the painting to stay in Vienna.
